Iron deficiency and iron-deficiency anaemia are common, affecting around one in ten Australians. For people undergoing elective surgery, iron-deficiency anaemia is a predictor of blood transfusion which is associated with adverse outcomes including mortality. This online module aims to support general practitioners and practice nurses in preoperative blood management. It highlights their important role in reducing exposure to blood products by identifying and treating anaemia and iron deficiency in people for whom surgery is planned.

On completion of this activity you should be able to:

• Assess and screen for iron deficiency and anaemia in patients preparing for elective surgery.
• Differentiate between iron deficiency anaemia with and without an inflammatory influence through interpreting pathology results.
• Identify indications and treatment duration for iron therapy, and prescribe appropriately.
• Explain the importance of investigating the underlying cause of iron deficiency and undertake appropriate investigations to identify the underlying cause.
• Organise appropriate support for patients with iron deficiency anaemia (with or without inflammatory component) who are planning surgery.
• Develop a multidisciplinary approach to monitor and manage patients pre- and post-surgery.
