National Medicines Symposium: The ABC of Health Literacy
Health literacy is how people understand information about health and health care, and how they act on it. Health literacy affects all areas of medicine selection, use and adherence. People with low health literacy are more likely to experience medicine errors and worse health outcomes.
Health literacy can often feel like too big an issue to tackle.
NMS 2022 aims to support putting health literacy into action to improve the quality use of medicines. NMS 2022 will bring individuals, organisations and experts together to share ideas and learn from each other. You will take away tools and resources to help improve health literacy in your organisation or community.
Abstracts
The theme for NMS 2022 is The ABC of Health Literacy. Within this theme, abstract may be submitted in one of the following streams:
1. How do we build a health literate organisation?
There are 10 attributes for a health literate organisation. How have you and your organisation worked towards developing a health literate organisation? How can others adopt these strategies?
2. How can literacy principles improve medicine use?
All medicines policies, practices and initiatives should include a focus on health literacy. What practical examples are there within health as well as other sectors from which we can learn about how to improve health literacy.
3. How do we support those with the greatest need?
Vulnerable groups at greater risk of low health literacy include:
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders
- Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Communities
- People with low literacy levels
- People who are digitally excluded
How have you supported health literacy in these groups? What has worked and what hasn’t? What lessons have you learnt?
